The reason that the trunk becomes locked has to do with two things.

1)  The extra weight on the trunk caused by the spoiler.

2)The trunk locking mechanism is a two-stage lock.

Below is the liability label that Mitsubishi places on every trunk.

IF YOU CAN”T READ THE TEXT ABOVE (see below)

”In accordance with Federal Law, the rear gate uses a two position latch.  If the rear gate is not fully latched when closed, reopen the gate and close with firm pressure and speed.”

This label proves that the mechanism used in the trunk has two locking positions.
